This is a beautifully preserved Sublunduloceras lonsdalli ammonite from the Mikhailov quarry in the Ryazan region of Russia. Pyritized ammonites are ammonite fossils that have been coated with pyrite crystals over time.
Ammonites are extinct marine cephalopods that lived during the Jurassic period, around 240 million years ago. They were predatory mollusks with spiral shells that resembled squids, but were more closely related to octopuses. Ammonites are named after the Egyptian god Ammon because their shells resemble ram horns, which were associated with the deity
